Today was our transfer from Fredericksburg to Gettysburg. We left the hotel at about 11.15 and got to Gettysburg at about 1.30pm. We were a bit early to check in and so we left our bags at the hotel and went for some lunch.
We found a little brewery and cafe and had some nice fish and chips and Jamie had a chicken dish. It was a really friendly place and quite relaxed, big contrast to Fredericksburg. Well, I say quiet, that is apart from the huge thunder and lightening storm we had during lunch. weird though as half hour later it was all clear as though nothing had happened !! After this we went to the Gettysburg Historical Museum.
This was a really nice museum, full with memorabilia and showing videos. One video was shown in a theatre with a fantastic diorama in front.
Much of the rest of the museum was set up as smaller displays and information boards.
After this we took a stroll to the outskirts of the town where we found some monuments at the side of the road. We soon found they led to others which were on the National military park. We walked along Cemetery Ridge looking at the numerous monuments that were overlooking the hallowed ground of Pickett’s Charge. We were amazed by the scope of the battlefield around Pickett’s Charge.
Tomorrow we aim to first visit the National Military Park Visitor Centre and take a bus tour of the battlefield areas.
The one thing that has really shocked us in Gettysburg is the difference on one side of the road
to the other…..
